DIDGERIDOO RITIRO 18° Edition – April 2025

Are you missing a place to play, grow, exchange ideas, and immerse yourself in the sound of the didgeridoo for three days?

Have you ever wished to play the didgeridoo with more confidence, fluidity, and a deeper connection with yourself and your audience? You’re not alone! The most common feedback I hear is the frustration of feeling stuck, either technically or creatively.

If you can already perform circular breathing and master some rhythms, this is the event for you.

If you haven’t learned circular breathing yet or have doubts, go ahead and use the registration form, leaving a comment with your needs. I might already have free resources to share with you.

Instructors:

ANSGAR STEIN – Germany / Austria

Ansgar Stein picked up on the didgeridoo in 1993 after visiting a concert of the iconic Aboriginal rock band YOTHU YINDI, drawing from inspirations of traditional and modern didgeridoo playing alike. He was not satisfied with being confined to the prevailing esoteric frameset of the days, so he took his love for science, his nerdy science-fiction obsession, joy of painting and costume, his admiration of language to nurture his love for the allegedly simple and yet complex didgeridoo. Describing himself as an “ambitioned pop-musician on a fringe instrument”, he implemented the didgeridoo in musical styles from experimental jazz, funk, ethno, and, most notably, trance.

Apart from the musical approach, Ansgar also publishes in the field, worked as graphic designer for the internationally published Didgeridoo Magazine, and for the publishing house Traumzeit-Verlag, is a founding member of and contributor to the German Online Didgeridoo Enyclopedia.

ANDREA FERRONI – Italia

Andrea Ferroni is a versatile expert in the fields of didgeridoo and acoustics, internationally recognized for his contributions in both music and science. With an advanced background in engineering and a two-decade-long career in Finite Element Method (FEM) simulation applied to acoustics and vibrations, Andrea blends technical rigor with artistic creativity.

He is the founder of the Scuola del Didgeridoo di Torino (2004) and conducts workshops and webinars for students around the world. His experience has led him to collaborate with universities and research institutes, and he has been a speaker at major events such as TEDx, where he explored the interaction between sound perception and music. Andrea is also a prominent artist and teacher, with performances at international festivals and educational projects that promote the didgeridoo as both a musical and therapeutic instrument.

PROGRAM:

Ansgar Stein:

PP Power Phonetics

How didgeridoo-sounds work and why they are related to our speech and how to get them across more powerful and edgy. Including: details about differences and similarities between speech and didgeridoo playing, and why you should definitely care about phonetics when you want to improve and strengthen your playing. Consists of: Exercises, applications and tricks to implement in your playing.

(Note: This lesson has two sides: One is more practically orientated with instructions, tips, tricks and examples. The other is theoretically focused with all the background facts worth knowing that make the practice meaningful. I offer both from time to time, in case such a thing is wanted or there is a slot that also allows for a theoretical approach. If yes, then I am happy to make use of it.)

BB Breathing Booster

How to get your breathing into the next level of didgeridoo playing. Including: Details about the physiology of breathing, how breathing AS SUCH works and why you should care, and why we would want to overcome ‘therapeutical breathing’ in the end. As a side effect, the way you breathe may be the foundation for so-called ‘wobbles’. Consists of: Exercises, applications and tricks to implement in your playing.

WW Whirly Wobbles

As we’re on it: What IS a ‘wobble’, anyway? Why do some players ‘wobble’ and others do not? Including: Details about possible definitions of a ‘wobble’, how some of them work and why they are so difficult to play for some. And why they can make your playing faster, more relaxed and also more powerful at the same time. Contains: Tips and tricks to play, implement, alter, and combine ‘wobbles’.

FF Fancy Fusions

What are the main differences between the so-called ‘traditional’ playing and modern styles? How can we identify it and what could we possibly learn from it? And why might it be useful to incorporate inspiration and elements from these styles into our playing routine? May include approaches to questions of authenticity and cultural appropriation. Consists of: Exercises, applications and tricks to implement in grooves.

UU Unique Ubiquity

The didgeridoo is a truly unique representative in the realm of musical instruments, and even more so among wind instruments. Why this is so, and why all attempts at likening the didgeridoo to other wind instruments like the alphorn, the Mayan trumpet, the ancient lur and others failed so spectacularly, will be the subject of this short excursion. Includes (surprisingly): a definition of ‘didgeridoo’

ANDREA FERRONI:

Characteristics and Potential of the Didgeridoo
One of my signature topics, so fundamental that it serves as the introduction to any didgeridoo workshop I conduct—even for musicians from other fields—is the study of harmonics and dynamics.
Harmonics and the dynamics of sound are deeply tied to human evolution, so much so that they are ingrained in how we perceive and create music. For this reason, I consider these elements essential pillars for refining musical sensitivity and improving the effectiveness of any technique performed on the didgeridoo. Although ever-present in the use of the instrument, harmonics and dynamics are often overlooked or poorly executed, which compromises the quality and enjoyment of the music produced. Focusing on these aspects can elevate the sound’s quality and expand the musician’s expressive possibilities.

After this introduction, we will explore various techniques, some familiar but to be further refined:

  • Staccato and Double Staccato
  • Wobble examples, aligning with insights from Ansgar Stein

Others, less known and more intricate, will be examined in greater depth:

  • Throat techniques
  • Toot breathing

Depending on the students’ level, each technique will be demonstrated with preparatory exercises designed to help them achieve mastery. During the listening and feedback sessions, each participant will be encouraged to give their best, leveraging their current abilities and prior experience while fostering technical and artistic growth tailored to their needs.
