Instructors:
ANSGAR STEIN – Germany / Austria
Ansgar, a trained graphic designer, discovered the didgeridoo back in 1993 after attending a concert by the legendary Aboriginal band YOTHU YINDI.
Inspired by both traditional and modern styles of the didgeridoo, Ansgar chose to break away from the esoteric aura that largely surrounded the instrument in those years. He combined his love of science, his nerdy passion for science fiction, his mechanical skills, his keen eye for graphic design, his joy for painting and costuming, his admiration for languages, and his fascination with movement, dance, and musical expression to fuel his budding love for this seemingly simple yet profoundly complex instrument.
With this unique and unprecedented approach to the musical scene, Ansgar has innovated the art of the didgeridoo.
Beyond music, Ansgar writes articles on the subject, is a founding member and contributor to the German online didgeridoo encyclopedia, and curates related entries on German Wikipedia.

ANSGAR STEIN:
PP Power Phonetics
How didgeridoo-sounds work and why they are related to our speech and how to get them across more powerful and edgy. Including: details about differences and similarities between speech and didgeridoo playing, and why you should definitely care about phonetics when you want to improve and strengthen your playing. Consists of: Exercises, applications and tricks to implement in your playing.
(Note: This lesson has two sides: One is more practically orientated with instructions, tips, tricks and examples. The other is theoretically focused with all the background facts worth knowing that make the practice meaningful. I offer both from time to time, in case such a thing is wanted or there is a slot that also allows for a theoretical approach. If yes, then I am happy to make use of it.)
BB Breathing Booster
How to get your breathing into the next level of didgeridoo playing. Including: Details about the physiology of breathing, how breathing AS SUCH works and why you should care, and why we would want to overcome ‘therapeutical breathing’ in the end. As a side effect, the way you breathe may be the foundation for so-called ‘wobbles’. Consists of: Exercises, applications and tricks to implement in your playing.
WW Whirly Wobbles
As we’re on it: What IS a ‘wobble’, anyway? Why do some players ‘wobble’ and others do not? Including: Details about possible definitions of a ‘wobble’, how some of them work and why they are so difficult to play for some. And why they can make your playing faster, more relaxed and also more powerful at the same time. Contains: Tips and tricks to play, implement, alter, and combine ‘wobbles’.
FF Fancy Fusions
What are the main differences between the so-called ‘traditional’ playing and modern styles? How can we identify it and what could we possibly learn from it? And why might it be useful to incorporate inspiration and elements from these styles into our playing routine? May include approaches to questions of authenticity and cultural appropriation. Consists of: Exercises, applications and tricks to implement in grooves.
UU Unique Ubiquity
The didgeridoo is a truly unique representative in the realm of musical instruments, and even more so among wind instruments. Why this is so, and why all attempts at likening the didgeridoo to other wind instruments like the alphorn, the Mayan trumpet, the ancient lur and others failed so spectacularly, will be the subject of this short excursion. Includes (surprisingly): a definition of ‘didgeridoo’.
ANDREA FERRONI
Characteristics and Potentials of the Didgeridoo
One of my core strengths, so fundamental that it serves as the introduction to any didgeridoo workshop, even for musicians of other instruments, is the study of harmonics and dynamics.
Harmonics and sound dynamics are deeply linked to human evolution, so much so that they are ingrained in our way of perceiving and creating music. For this reason, I consider these aspects essential pillars for refining musical sensitivity and enhancing the effectiveness of any technique performed with the didgeridoo. Although omnipresent in the use of the instrument, harmonics and dynamics are often neglected or performed imprecisely, compromising the quality and enjoyment of the music. Focusing on these elements can transform the sound produced, expanding the expressive possibilities of the musician.
After this introduction, we will explore several techniques, some already known but that we will refine:
- Staccato and Double Staccato
- Examples of wobble, to harmonize with Ansgar Stein’s lessons
Other, lesser-known and more complex techniques, on which we will focus in depth:
- Throat techniques
- Breathing on the toot
Depending on the students’ level, each technique will be explained with preparatory exercises aimed at their development. During listening and control sessions, each participant will be guided to express the full extent of their abilities, enhancing their previous skills and encouraging a personalized technical and artistic progression.
