Djalu Gurruwiwi (circa 1935 – 12 May 2022) was a Yolngu elder from Arnhem Land, Northern Australia, celebrated worldwide for his mastery of the yiḏaki (didgeridoo). He was renowned as a player, maker, and spiritual keeper of the instrument. Born on either Wirriku or Milingimbi Island, his exact birth date is uncertain. Djalu held various names, including the European “Willie” and Aboriginal “Wulumbuyku,” with his skin name being Wamut. As a leader of the Dhuwa moiety Gälpu clan, he played a crucial role in preserving and promoting Yolngu culture.

Djalu devoted his life to the yiḏaki, creating instruments that were highly regarded for their quality and spiritual significance. His work as an artist is celebrated, with many of his didgeridoos featured in galleries. Djalu aimed to spread Yolngu traditions beyond his community, and his teachings have influenced both indigenous and non-indigenous musicians globally.

He passed away in Arnhem Land on 12 May 2022, believed to be in his late 80s. A biography of his life, capturing his contributions to music and culture, was published posthumously by his adopted wawa, Peter Botsman, in late 2022.
